I will update this blog from time to time with questions I get.
Is there any way to block the inappropriate content that shows up in my reels on my Facebook App?
There is no way to filter the content with an Internet filter once you are in the application of Facebook without the use of a third party tool, like Canopy or Bark. You can also not permanently block all Reels on Facebook, but you can significantly reduce the inappropriate ones using a combination of in-app settings.
- Enable the “Show Less” sensitive content control
This is the most direct way to automatically filter sensitive and potentially offensive content from your feed, including Reels.
- Open the Facebook app and tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
- Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
- Scroll down to Preferences > Content preferences>
- Tap on Sensitive Content.
- Select the Show Less and tap OK.
- Adjust ad preferences
- Open the Facebook app: and tap the Menu icon (three lines) in the top right corner of the screen.
- Tap on Settings & privacy, then tap on Settings.
- Accounts Center is at the top
- Tap on Ad preferences.
- You will now see various options to manage your ad experience:
- Scroll down to Ad preferences
- Scroll down to Ad topics - See All
- If there is anything in here, click here and choose See Less if you do not want it.
- Now click on Special topics and choose what topics you want to see less
- If there’s a specific advertiser you don’t want to see ads from, you can also hide their ads
- Disable auto play on the Facebook mobile app:
- Open the Facebook app and tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
- Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
- Tap Media.
- Under the “Video playback” section, select Never auto play videos
- Hide Reels individually (not ideal)
This is an ongoing process that helps train the algorithm over time.
- When a Reel appears in the feed, tap the three dots (…) next to it.
- Select Hide or Not interested. You can also choose to hide all videos from that specific page or user.
