Setting Up Screen Time for Kids on Android with Google Family Link

📱 Setting Up Android with Google Family Link

Why This Matters

We should be owners of the technology we purchase — not the other way around.

On Android, strong parental oversight begins with Google Family Link.

Digital Wellbeing alone is not sufficient for child devices.

Before You Start (For Parents)

If setting this up for a child or teen, begin with a conversation.

Explain:

  • This is about protection, not punishment.

  • Every home has guardrails.

Boundaries paired with conversation build trust and growth.

IMPORTANT: Set Up Google Family Link First

Family Link provides:

  • Remote management

  • Screen time limits

  • Bedtime enforcement

  • App approval control

  • Web filtering

Setup Steps

  1. Install Google Family Link on the parent device.

  2. Sign in with your Google account.

  3. Create a Google account for your child.

  4. Add your child to your family group.

  5. Sign into the child’s device with their account.

  6. Link the device.

Manage settings from the parent phone.

Step 1: Set Daily Screen Time Limits

Inside Family Link:

  1. Select your child

  2. Tap Controls

  3. Tap Daily limit

  4. Set limits for weekdays and weekends

When time expires, the device locks.

Step 2: Set Bedtime (High Priority)

Inside Family Link:

  1. Select your child

  2. Tap Controls

  3. Tap Bedtime

  4. Set nightly hours

During Bedtime:

  • Device locks

  • Notifications silence

  • Apps cannot be used (except approved)

Step 3: Approve or Block App Downloads

Inside Google Family Link:

  1. Select your child

  2. Tap Controls > Content restrictions > Google Play > Apps & Games

  3. Set Age Restriction → 10+

Require approval for:

  • App downloads

  • In-app purchases

  • New installations

Tip: Regularly review installed apps to ensure nothing bypasses the protection

Step 4: Configure Content Restrictions

Inside Family Link:

  1. Select your child

  2. Tap Controls → Set Content restrictions per Google Apps

Configure:

  • Chrome filtering – Block explicit sites or allow approved sites only

  • SafeSearch – Turn on to filter search results

  • YouTube – Set to Restricted Mode

Optional: Remove Access Completely

  • Disable Chrome on the device by selecting App activity → Chrome --> Uncheck Allowed. May need to produce activity first.

  • Disable YouTube on the device similarly

Layered filtering and app restrictions together significantly reduce exposure.

Protect Your Device On the Go (VPN Protection)

If Chrome is still enabled: Family Link manages the account, but DNS filtering at the router stops working once the device leaves home.

Install CleanBrowsing’s VPN app on the child’s Android device to maintain filtering everywhere.

Why This Matters

A DNS-filtering VPN:

  • Keeps filtering active on cellular data

  • Maintains restrictions on school or public Wi-Fi

  • Prevents easy DNS bypassing

Setup Overview

  1. Install CleanBrowsing from Google Play

  2. Select Family Filter

  3. Approve VPN configuration

  4. Confirm it is connected

✅ Filtering now travels with the device, including Chrome if it’s still installed.

Why 10+ on Android?

Setting the Google Play age restriction to 10+ helps create a safe baseline for children:

  • Removes most social platforms from visibility – Limits early exposure to social apps.

  • Reduces access to mature games and content – Keeps gameplay age-appropriate.

  • Minimizes inappropriate advertising – Limits exposure to adult-targeted ads.

  • Creates a strong baseline for safety – Balances functionality with protection.

💡 Note: Google policies and app availability change over time. Regular check-ins in Family Link are necessary to ensure protections remain effective.

Restrictions Alone Are Not Enough

Filters are guardrails—they help, but they don’t protect on their own.

  • Conversation – Talk regularly about why boundaries exist.

  • Modeling – Demonstrate healthy tech use yourself.

  • Accountability – Encourage children to take ownership of choices.

  • Gradual Responsibility – Slowly increase independence as trust and maturity grow.
