🍎 Apple iPhone / iPad: Full Parental Setup with Screen Time
Why This Matters
Setting up digital guardrails for your children protects attention, reduces exposure to harmful content, and builds healthy habits. By managing Screen Time from the parent device via Family Sharing, you maintain full oversight and prevent children from bypassing protections.
Step 1: Set Up Apple Family Sharing (Do This First)
Always configure Family Sharing before adjusting Screen Time.
Family Sharing Allows You To:
-
Manage Screen Time remotely
-
Prevent passcode changes by the child
-
View weekly activity reports
-
Approve or deny app downloads
To Set Up:
-
Open Settings
-
Tap your Apple ID at the top
-
Select Family Sharing
-
Add your child (create a child Apple ID if needed)
-
Sign in on the child’s device with their Apple ID
✅ Important: Screen Time is automatically active on the child’s device. No need to manually turn on Screen Time or set a passcode on the child device.
Step 2: Enable Content & Privacy Restrictions (CRITICAL)
All changes are made from the parent device via Family Sharing.
-
Open Settings > Screen Time on the parent device
-
Select your child
-
Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions → Toggle On
Configure the following:
-
Apps → Set to 9+
-
Removes most social media, dating apps, and mature games
-
-
App Clips → Don’t Allow
-
Web Content → Limit Adult Websites
-
Safari → Don’t Allow
-
Go to Allowed Apps → toggle Safari off to remove access completely
-
-
Siri → Disable Web Search & Explicit Language
-
Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps → Siri & Dictation → Off
-
Optionally also disable explicit language under Content Restrictions → Siri
-
-
Review Game Center settings if relevant
Step 3: Lock App Store Permissions
-
iTunes & App Store Purchases → Set:
-
Deleting Apps → Don’t Allow
-
In-App Purchases → Don’t Allow
-
This prevents the child from bypassing protections by deleting apps.
Step 4: Require Purchase Approval
-
Under Family Sharing, enable Ask to Buy
-
All app downloads or purchases must be approved by the parent
Step 5: Set Daily App Limits
-
Go to Screen Time → App Limits
-
Select relevant categories (social, games, entertainment)
-
Enable Block at End of Limit
Step 6: Set Downtime (Bedtime / Tech-Free Hours)
-
Tap Downtime
-
Schedule nightly hours (example: 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
-
Enable Block at Downtime
Step 7: Protect Your Device On the Go
If Safari is still enabled, device management controls will help but web filtering will stop once we leave the home network.
Installing CleanBrowsing’s VPN app on your child’s iPhone keeps filtering active wherever the device goes.
Why This Matters
A DNS-filtering VPN:
-
Keeps filtering active on cellular data
-
Maintains restrictions on school or public Wi-Fi
-
Reduces the chance of bypassing filters
Setup Overview
-
Install the CleanBrowsing app from the App Store
-
Open the app and select Family Filter
-
Allow VPN configuration when prompted
-
Confirm the VPN shows as connected
✅ Filtering now travels with the device, helping maintain protection across browsers and networks.
Why 9+ on Apple?
-
Removes most social platforms from visibility
-
Limits exposure to mature games and content
-
Reduces inappropriate advertising
-
Creates a strong baseline for safety while still allowing basic functionality
💡 Note: These settings are subject to change based on Apple’s policies and App Store updates. This is why regular check-ins on Screen Time are necessary to ensure protections remain effective.
Restrictions Alone Are Not Enough
Filters are guardrails—they help, but they don’t protect on their own.
-
Conversation – Talk regularly about why boundaries exist.
-
Modeling – Demonstrate healthy tech use yourself.
-
Accountability – Encourage children to take ownership of choices.
-
Gradual Responsibility – Slowly increase independence as trust and maturity grow.
Remember: Tools protect, but guidance shapes character.
